Sets up assigned station on tray assembly line or cafeteria line with all needed food items according to menu, special orders and supply items Understands the importance for meal service to be provided in a timely manner Breaks down and cleans work station after meal service is completed Checks food items before and during meal service for proper temperature Records temperatures and takes corrective action when temperature is unacceptable Helps patients at bedside with routine meal service needs such as tray set-up Reads menu and patient diet cards or tray tickets to determine correct food items to place on the patient trays according to the regular or modified diet Identifies discrepancies between regular and modified diets and food items on the menu or special order Serves trays to the patient's bedside or dining room in a polite and attentive manner and in accordance to established procedure Reports Veterans comments, complaints or requests to Health Technician, Leader, Supervisor and/or Dietitians Serves cold and hot food items attractively, neatly, in correct portions, and places in proper serving dishes Keeps equipment clean and reports any needed repairs promptly to supervisor Operates equipment correctly and safely according to established procedures Transports food carts to refrigerated and patient areas; uses tugger to transport food carts to patient areas; pushes and/or pulls food carts to and from patient areas to deliver and pick-up trays from the patient bedside or dining room and returns them to the dishwashing area Scrapes dishes, loads dish machine with soiled dishes, receives and stores clean dishes, keeps dish machine, dish dispensers and working area clean Operates dish machine, checks and records dish machine temperatures, and reports problems to supervisor Scours cooking utensils and pans, operates pot and pan washer and returns clean pots and utensils to storage area Assembles coffee, tea/and other beverages according to established procedure and current patient census Works with Health Technicians to assure that all Veteran meal areas are staffed and meal service standards are met Maintains dishes and/or flatware in good condition, informs Leaders and/or Supervisors when replacement items are needed Disposes of chipped dishes and plasticware when glaze has worn off Maintains proper temperature of cold food items (chilled foods for trayline, milk, salads and desserts, and ice cream) by storing them under proper temperature before being used Covers, labels and dates foods stored in refrigerators, freezers or storage areas Operates automated advanced delivery food carts and follows HACCP (hazard analysis critical control process) steps to insure consistent refrigeration and appropriate hot temperatures for rethermalized foods Handles automated advanced delivery carts in a safe manner avoiding accidents caused from pushing/pulling carts Practices safe food-handling techniques by washing hands, wearing hair nets, using disposable gloves properly, wearing a clean uniform, and wearing short, clean, and unpolished fingernails Reports to work free from colds, other communicable diseases and infected cuts or burns Assembles ingredients and prepares salads and sandwiches with standardized recipes and according to sanitation standards Recognizes the importance of customer service and assures foods are served in a timely manner and is coordinated with appropriate medical patient care (e.g. insulin therapy) Performs heavy duty cleaning tasks such as cleaning ceilings, exhaust hoods, equipment, and floors and walls Uses heavy duty cleaning agents and powered cleaning equipment Develops a positive working relationship with fellow employees and works as a team member in order to respond to the needs of the patients in a timely and professional manner Work Schedule:
Sunday - Saturday with rotating days off; 7am - 3:

Experience:

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
The work of this position requires continuous standing on hard-surfaced floors, walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending. You will frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 50 pounds with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Work is performed in a large food service area around large heat generating and moving equipment. Work, at times, may be performed on wet, potentially slippery floors. You will be subject to noise and extreme hot and/or cold temperatures and can be subject to minor cuts, burns and bruises. Work is performed under pressure with inflexible deadlines. You must concentrate for lengthy periods of time and work with frequent interruptions.
