VA police officers are a vital part of ensuring a safe and secure environment across the VA. Officers must have a special skill set that allows them to empathize, engage, and communicate with individuals. Their safety and security is paramount to ensuring that the VA can successfully fulfill President Lincoln's promise To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his orphan by serving and honoring the men and women who are America's Veterans. Veterans should be able to enter any VA facility across the country with the confidence that they will receive a consistently high level of protection and customer service from VA police officers. The specific duties of a Police Officer include but are not limited to:
Executes rules, regulations, and procedures covering laws and rules enforcement, physical and personal security operations. Patrols VA facilities. Identify situations where criminal activity has occurred or is about to occur. Assess danger and threats and take proper recourse. Maintain emotional control if assaulted or threatened or being verbally abused. Operates Magnetometers (X-Ray machines), and uses hand held wand-type metal detectors to clear any individual who causes the magnetometers to alarm and that items entering the medical center pass through the Magnetometers or be visually inspected. Writes uniform offense reports covering incidents containing pertinent information, which is factual, classified properly and submits such reports timely. Uses patience/understanding when confronted with emotionally disturbed and physically handicapped patients. Conduct the performance of law enforcement work in the preservation of the peace. Question suspects/witnesses and performs investigative procedures. Independently conducts foot patrol and vehicle patrol. Informs individuals about their rights as suspects and/or witnesses. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note:

Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Physical Requirements:
The work requires on a regular and recurring basis considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, running, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restrictive areas during search or pursuit activities, or defending oneself or others against physical attack. Body armor, police duty equipment and firearm(s) must be worn and carried at all times. The wearing of this equipment significantly amplifies the physical strain experienced by the employee during physical exertion or during periods of hot weather. Employees are regularly required to work long hours. Must have the ability to use firearms. Both eyes are required, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, and emotional stability under stress. Ability to run in pursuit of suspects. Responding to all life's rescue, safety and fire emergencies to include the ability to carry persons in emergency evacuations must use physical ability to restrain violent persons. Intervenes in assaults, criminal acts and disturbances. Must pass annual physical and psychological testing. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
